Macau, the Asian Las Vegas

While many people in western culture would not know where Macau is, it is well known throughout Asia. A small island territory off of the coast of China, Macau is known as the Asian Las Vegas. The territory was originally a Portuguese colony for many years until recently given back to the People’s Republic of China.

Hong Kong and Macau

Gambling is the main attraction in Macau, having been a legal activity since the early 1900’s. While the region started off offering traditional Chinese and European gambling, it has since become more westernized. Many of the major gambling moguls of the Las Vegas Strip have set up shop. In most cases these hotels and casinos are making a higher profit than their Las Vegas counterparts.

Casinos and the Vegas Strip

Some of the hotels and casinos that are based off of resorts on the Vegas strip include the Macau Venetian, MGM Grand Macau and the Macau Wynn Resort. The Macau resorts offer similar amenities as the Vegas resorts, although the hotel capacity is usually lower and the gambling floors more extensive. This is because Macau is widely known as a day trip location, rather than an overnight trip.

In a recent article by the Washington Post, it is explained that may Chinese see gambling as an investment. Some feel that putting their money in the bank, “which offers less interest than the rate of inflation,” as not wise investing. Many Chinese feel that investing is a form of gambling and the other way around too.

The favorite game in Macau is of course, Baccarat. Many high rollers visit to play the game and stay in VIP rooms. High rollers visit from China, Australia and the United States each year and are treated as a form of royalty in the casinos and hotels.

Macau, a territory of China, is a well-known gambling location for those located in and around Asia. It is much like the Vegas strip with a number of larger casinos extravagantly built surrounding the area.

Although it started off as featuring Chinese gambling games, the city slowly became more westernized and common American gambling games were featured. As popularity of the gambling location grew, and the government lessened restrictions on the gambling monopoly, many American casinos set up shop, increasing the annual gambling revenue further.

There are currently 6 different American subsidiaries located in Macau. These include well-known companies such as Wynn Resorts Macau Hotel, Sands Las Vegas Macau Hotel and MGM Mirage Macau Hotel. It was in 2007 when Macau gambling revenue exceeded the gambling revenue of Las Vegas and Las Vegas Hotels due to increased accessibility for Hong Kong residents by way of water transport as well as an increased number of casinos and gambling opportunities.

Record gambling revenues from mainland China and are looking at 44 million visitors this year.  The high rollers from China are making this happen for Macau Casinos.  Macau may only just be getting started as future resorts are being planned.

More growth is expected over the next five years in the one Chinese city where gambling is legal.  While most of the profits are from Chinese gamblers, a lot of high rollers from the UK and the US have been seen at some of the more prominent casinos.


With more casinos and more encouragement for tourism, Macau may very well become the next Las Vegas as millions of people travel to the city each year from all across the globe.
